Highgrove Florilegium
Visit J. Pocker & Son's 63Rd Street location for a special viewing of this exquisit publication.
The Highgrove Florilegium is as much a celebration of botanical art as of craftsmanship. It has been the inspiration for two exhibitions in America. Visit J. Pocker & Son's 63Rd Street location for a special viewing of this exquisit publication and for more details. For the last nine years many of the leading botanical atrists from around the world have been painting examples of the plants and trees growing at the Highgrove House in Glouvestershire, the home of TRH The Prince of Wales and the Dutchess of Cornwall. These artists were commissioned by the Clarence House Selection Committee including Anne Marie Evans – the renowned teacher of botanical art who planned the botanical courses at the Chelsea Physic Garden. Anne Marie teaches students around the world. It has taken 5 years to realise this publication. It is a two volume work limited to 175 numbered sets. Prince Charles has written the preface and has personally signed each book in ink. Dimensions of each volume approximately 26 x 19 x 3 inches. Books are bound individually by hand upon receipt of subscription. A list of subscribers appears at the back of the book along with the colophen. A list of an Institution’s subscribing patrons may be included in the front of the book.

More than 65 artists from around the world have contributed to the book. There are 61 facsimile watercolours in volume one and 63 in volume two.
The hand binding has been executed by Stephen Conway, Halifax, West Yorkshire, under the overall supervision and to the design of James Brockman, Oxford, who has also been responsible with his son Stuart for the hand-tooling and finishing. The ‘Chieftain’ goatskin leathers have been specially dyed and prepared by J. Hewit & Sons Ltd, Edinburgh.
The end papers have been designed by Rodney Shirley Smith – a colleague of Iain Bain the typographer and designer of the book. Iain Bain was formerly the Publications Director of the Tate Gallery.
The marbled papers used for the boards have been made by Victoria Hall, Norwich who began her studio and developed her skill with a grant from the Prince’s Trust. The Prince’s Foundation provides assistance in the arts, crafts, business, conservation, and farming world wide.
Each volume is protected with a woollen book jacket made from merino wool had teased, designed and sewn by Liz Brown in her studio in Ayrshire, Scotland. The book is archivally approved, 100% rag papers for the text have been made especially made for the publication at the Somerset Mill, England. The archival approved, 100% rag paper for the illustrations are made at the Monadnock Mill in New Hampshire, USA. The book is printed in England at Westerham Press using the stochastic lithographic process.
Prof. Chris Humphries, the master mind of the Banks Florilegium – the first edition printing from the original copper plates two hundred years after the expedition by Capt. Cook / Joseph Banks to Australia which was published to celebrate the Australian bi-centenary - has written the introduction as well as arranging the book in taxonomic order and editing the caption pages written by scientists in the Botanical Department at the Natural History Museum in London.
Christopher Mills, Head of Library, Art & Archives at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, has provided an essay placing this florilegia in the historic context of the great florilegia.
